Electric Car Models and their Prices in India
The introduction of Electric Cars in India has been slow and hesitant. While people have been waiting with baited breath for news on the latest models, its prices and advancements to match the rest of the world, the country has kept hush about its options.
As the nation wakes to the need of eco-friendly transport, the first wave of change has been noticed in the form of the introduction and wide popularization of the Electric Rickshaws. With the Capital city of Delhi adopting these modern electric rickshaws which promise to remove the age-old auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws from the streets, the green scene has gained public notice. And approval.
This makes us revisit the notion of electric cars. Durable and efficient vehicles that can finally replace our fuel cars and not just save us money but also contribute to the environment.
What options do we have to go electric? What’s the future of electric cars and their affordability in India? How do they compare in terms of price with their fuel-powered counterparts? Let’s find out.
The Price of Electric Cars v/s Fuel Cars in India
Where the options in India are limited, there are a few that skim the surface. With upcoming models from the likes of Chevrolet and BMW, there is a possibility of a wider range available to the eager market.
Price of Mahindra Reva e20 (electric car) in India
Reva, now having given up on it’s older – more affordable models, have released a newer variant. the Reva e20 is priced at around Rs.6 lacs and is compared to Swift which is available at around Rs.4.5 lacs.
The one factor that actually set Reva back instead of giving it the leap it needed was the technology of Lithium Ion that has now been used instead of Lead Acid that was previously incorporated. This has not just bumped up the cost, but has also made replacement of batteries incredibly expensive – estimated at around Rs.1.5 lacs. These batteries are also not available ready in stock which means the user has to wait for them to be imported in order to start on their electric car again.
Price of Speedways Grande (electric car) in India
The need for a new form of electric car has risen in smaller companies taking a stand and developing innovative solutions. Speedways has launched its own variant of the widely popular NEVs (Neighborhood Electric Vehicles) in countries like US and USA with their electric car model – Grande.
The Grande is built as a cute little city car that is perfect for everyday transit. Unlike the e20, it runs on Lead Acid Batteries (also produced at Speedways Electric), which makes replacement easy, cheap and convenient. The Grande is also a great buy at Rs.4.5 lacs, placing it even below the comparison with Swift.
The look has been kept uniquely different from fuel cars so it looks more like an innovative machine and less like a boring old electric vehicle. Much like the smart cars that are popular abroad. With cars like these in the market, there is hope for more inventive creations in the electric car industry that are also priced right and convenient for consumers to drive and service.
Future of Electric Car Price in India
The Indian Government has supported the Electric Car project from the start. However, there is a pause and a certain lull to the question with the subsidy expiring. There is a hope of renewal for electric cars and some has come in the form of a recent pass of bill in the favor of electric quadricycles in India. This reinforces the future of electric cars in India as an alternative transport. Where prices are concerned, petrol and diesel cars only keep getting more expensive with every model’s release. And with roof-tipping gas prices, there seems no relief to their upkeep and running.
This should be reason enough for the country to want to switch to Electric and with government policies ensuring electricity becomes more affordable, it only gets better from here.
We can also hope for relief in road tax as well as no license registration fee for electric vehicles running under 25km/h, making electric cars an even more viable option in India.
Upcoming Electric Cars in India
With much anticipation everyone’s looking out for some stellar options in the electric car lineup. While we’re still waiting for the big players to make official announcement, we’re hoping more Indian car companies take the market by storm. Hopefully with solar panel additions so it is truly an unbeatable buy. From the upcoming models we can officially speak for, there’s Komodo and Elektrika from Speedways Electric.
Both these models are going to be very competitively priced and will even possibly be released as their hybrid editions.
The possibilities are endless and we’re looking forward to them!
